1. WestBank is divided into three different areas; A,B, and C. All divisions pertain to a specific group. For instance, Area C which is about 60% of the land is under Israeli control. However, this is unfair to the Palestinians who have a growing population and depend on area C for irrigation and crop growth. Therefore, both Israeli's and the Palestinians do not abide to who the land belongs to and take actions such as destroying buildings, crops, etc in order to feed its people and have a growing economy.
ReplyDelete2. The political problem is now environmental since Palestinians depend on area C in order to have water. This may mean drinking water and water for daily uses. However, no water leads to no irrigation which means crops will not be grown and people will starve. In addition, the destruction of crops and buildings means that the nutrients in soil will be deprived and particulates from destroying buildings will be released into the air causing both air and water pollution.
3. Issues like this persist around the world, because water and space are resources humans need to survive. Therefore, we will do anything to obtain these needs. Currently, the Dominican Republic is experiencing a similar situation. Many Haitians are immigrating into DR taking up a lot of space and obviously using many of their resources. There are about 1,930,000 Haitians in DR. This has led to risen tension between the two groups as Haitians are trying to survive and Dominicans are trying to save resources they do not have to spare.

(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteThe land and water crisis in the West Bank is the cause of the different ownership of the West Bank. The land is broken up into 3 section: A, B, and C. Because there are different ownership of the 3 areas, which has different resources, the land suffers from being over exploited and abused by the powers.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
Area C is known to have much of the water, and countries such as Palestine depend on Area C for much of the water used for daily and commercial use. If they get no water, then agriculture will die out and the society will not be fed and there will be no economic growth. Because so many countries rely on Area C, the water table is decreasing and the work going into getting the water is causing air and water pollution.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding?
Land and resources such as water is rapidly decreasing, which is causing such issues around the world. Countries are viewing this as a life or death situation and are doing everything in their political and economic power to make sure they don't face the consequences of limited resources and have their country suffer from such causes.
An example of this can be seen in South Africa, as the citizens were unsatisfied with the basic services that the government should be providing, so they protested over the "local failure to deliver adequate water and power to poor communities."

1). The land is separated into sections A,B,C. Since the three areas have different owners, with various resources, the damage is different for each side.
ReplyDelete2). Area C has alot of water and Palestinians depend on this area for their water usage and by continuously utilizing their water resource the aquifers and other reservoirs of water will dry out which will be an even worse problem.
3). In Tanzania, water most often comes from open holes dug in the sand of dry riverbeds, and it is usually contaminated
People aren’t getting enough water for them to support their land or crop, let alone themselves. This crisis is causing the settlers to result in more drastic actions. One of which is by pounding nails into pipes that diverted away from their land. From this they would take the water to fit their needs. The settlers realized they had to play dirty to get what they wanted. Now the politicians are starting to negotiate after the recent water theft from them and made a deal to give them water as long as no more nails are put into the pipes. The reason politics is so important in the environment is because they become the managers to what happens in their environment. They are controlling what part of land needs water.Issues like these happen because of the fact that managing water has more components than just give it to the citizens. When managing water it goes to the environment, agriculture, the people, and the ocean. This is the issue in California, they hardly get rain due to a bad drought. However due to environmental policies, most of the water goes back to the environment before it is even sent to agriculture or homes. Also when is comes to consumption many more richer homes are wasting more water than those that could use it for crops and food. So in this situation people are fighting for such a simple priority, water.

(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteThe land and water crisis in the West Bank is a problem that was created when Area C was not divided properly because the Israeli state wants the land for security, but the Palestinians want it for crop harvesting. Therefore they steal water from each other and destroy each others crops.
The Area C farmers are also very dependent on irrigation which also puts the farmers in a crisis.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
The political problem is now environmental because the company is taking water and taking it to another place to feed the Jews, but this has other environmental drawbacks. Since this area is under sea level, that means that it does not rain as much and taking away water from the natural sources that are found can make the land even more arid.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
Issues like this continue to happen because many people do not want to settle and create laws that benefit both the environment and the people. Instead , people tend to fight for water like here and steal it from one another.
Another example is Chad, a country which is in critical need for clean water resources. This has led to a food deficit in this country because of the lack of water for the plantation of food. With this, people also develop many diseases that stem from malnutrition.

1. The land and water crisis in the West Bank is that the Israeli have control over 60% of the West Bank where there is access to water. It is claimed that the Israeli get more water than Palestinians in the West Bank when the people in general need a lot of water.
ReplyDelete2. This political problem is now an environment problem because the water resources that the people are relying on is running out and water is not being evenly distributed here. Some people from other parts like in the West Bank obtain less water than they should have. This is a problem environmentally because now water intake depends on where these people live.
3. Issues like this happen around the world because people are greedy and selfish and only care about themselves. People also cares about the ones who can affords things or pay them money aka the rich. An issue similar to this is the Flint water outrage. Some people are questioning the issue to be a result of environmental racism and some advocates agree because it has a high population of black people as well as 40% of the population being poor.

1) The land and water crisis is that the Palestinians and Israelis are divided across the land. The Palestinians control local affairs while the Israelis are in control of the military. The water problem is that the area of the west bank is divided into 3 areas area A B and C. These areas limit the access that each group has and area C is devoted to agricultural.
ReplyDelete(2) Political problem is now an environmental problem because the politics are now deciding how can they efficiently use the water for everyone to have a fair trade while also keeping borders among the people and making sure their is water for the families to survive.
(3) Another place where this is happening in India. India has a population of 1.2 Billion by the year 2011. Each person has an estimate of 1,000 M^3 of water while the usable water is 700-1200 Billion M^3. This is conflicting with politics because the government has to satisfy the need of the rural, suburban and urban areas of India. And during this time India is undergoing a demographic transition therefore the country is shifting and changing its form and practices.
(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteCurrently, the West Bank is split between Israelis and Palestinians. The Israelis, however, control the section of land (Area C) that controls the water access. In addition, Israelis control most of the agricultural land that also happens to be in Area C.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
This began as a political problem. The West Bank, which was won under the control of Israel, was divided up to prevent/calm conflict between the two countries. This became an environmental issue due to the lack of access to certain resources for Palestinians, such as water and crops. Israelis have tended to destroy Palestinian crops.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
Issues like this continue to persist due to lack of political involvement by both local and foreign governments. Water in the Tigris-Euphrates Basin is being drained as a result of decreased rainfall and lack of water management. These all stem from political issues. In Iraq, there has been a slack of a strong government. Syria's conflict was said to be a a result of the influx of farmers moving into cities due to the drought, sparking the revolution.

1) The land and water crisis is the circumstance where the west bank is split between Israelis and Palestinians. The Israelis control most of the agricultural land too. Both these lands lie in an area called the area C
ReplyDelete2) Water that the people are relying on is running out and furthermore it is not being evenly distributed. Also the agricultural resources are being unevenly distributed too.
3) Issues like these persist because the people do not want to settle for less profit, instead they want to get the most profit out of a product that they own. An example of another country is Chad which is in critical need for clean water resources. This has led to a food deficit in this country because of the lack of water for the plantation of food.
(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteThe land and water crisis in West Bank is how the water and land are divided between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Area A and B are controlled by the Palestinians meanwhile Area C is supposed to serve for all the Israelis. 60% of the West Bank is controlled by the Israelis.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental
problem?
The political problem is now a environmental problem because now the water supply is running low and without water there are no crops. The Government is using some of the water supply to feed the jes in which leds to even more of a shortage.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding?
These issues persist around the world because government do not know how to evenly distribute the amount of water nor properly secure the area around it. Another place where conflict is happening is in Egypt and Ethiopia. Egypt and Ethiopia are arguing about the Nile river because Ethiopia is building a dam in which would cut off water flow to Egypt leaving many citizens who depend on the Nile river without as much water in which could cause in their death since they depend on the water for survival. There are currently many water usage debates in Africa.

ReplyDelete(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
Most of the land in the West Bank is under Isreali control even though it is split between the Palestinians and the Israeli. The land surrounding the West Bank is considered a desert and is below sea level. They need a lot of water so they get it from wells.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem? This is becoming an environmental problem because the Palestinians aren't getting the equal share of resources.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
These issues exist because theres a pride component in that some countries have conflict with each other also theres a lack of strong government involvement. Another example, the Philippines and China are in conflict because the Philippines said that the Chinese are illegally fishing in their sovereign waters.
"China promptly sent two naval vessels of its own to the area, claiming that the Gregorio del Pilar was harassing Chinese ships in Chinese, not Filipino waters. The fishing boats were eventually allowed to depart without further incident and tensions have eased somewhat. However, neither side has displayed any inclination to surrender its claim to the island, and both sides continue to deploy warships in the contested area." - alternet.org
1. The land and water crisis is caused by the different division of land. They are divided by sections called A, B, and C. Each section has different resources which causes the land to be exploited.
ReplyDelete2. The political problem is now an environmental problem because water is a scarce resource that is now being depleted moving it to another place to nourish the Israelis and causing the land to lose more water than it already is since there is little rain fall causing the land to become more arid.
3. A recent problem in which I personally experienced this summer in DR was that the country and cities were running out of water. The country was running out of water because of the low rainfall we were experiencing. When I went in July many relatives told me it hasn't rained since May. The water system used to supply each city was running low in water as well as many rivers and streams drying up. Which goes to show that we Dominicans and many people around the world facing this similar problem are taking advantage of the resources they already have available and not using them or saving them correctly.
The land and water crisis in the west bank is under both Israeli and Palestinian control. There are certain parts of the land and certain bodies of water that Palestinians need that Israelis have control over and vice versa. This is just an issue of territorial boundaries. This has turned from a political problem to an environmental problem because both Israelis and Palestinians are being headstrong about the territory that they own, and land and bodies of water owned by both groups have valuable resources vital to survival. Water is not being evenly distributed, which is now affecting large areas of crops. This leads to a food shortage in many areas. People begin to suffer from starvation all due to political feuds that could be solved with a peace agreement. An example of this is happening in Syria. Due to the political instability, people that did not escape the country are suffering from a lack of food a water. The physical war that is occurring is causing a destruction of crops, making it difficult for its citizens to find a stable source of food.
ReplyDelete(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteWest Banks is divided into 3 different parts: A, B, and C. Each part has different ownerships. West Banks is divided between the Israelis and Palestinians and is found in area C. The Israelis has ownership of most of the water and agricultural part of this area.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
This political problem is now an environmental problem because water and agriculture is not being distributed. This leads to a lack of resources for Palestinians civilians. Since there is not enough water, they aren't able to grow crops.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
Issues like these persist around the world because people tend to forget about how things/factors can benefit or have a negative affect on someone and/or the environment. All they care about is themselves and having a better life while the other suffers.
Another example of a country that is in desperate need of water will be Laos. Laos holds the largest part of the Mekong River. However, this river is experiencing a water crisis due to low water levels. The people in Laos depend on this river for food, transportation, electricity, etc. Because 80% of the agriculture is what sustains the population, the low amount of water is affecting food productivity and population growth.

(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteWest Bank is a landlocked area pertaining to the Middle East. It is divided into three sections (A,B, and C). The Israeli military currently occupies the West Bank but Palestinians are the ones who are in charge of local affairs within the certain cities of the West Bank. According to the podcast, about sixty percent of the West Banks is under Israeli control.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
Both groups are fighting for territory and resources which has several negative affects on the environment. One of the negative affects is in relations to the water supply. Earth is mostly covered in water but only about 3% of that water is fresh and clean. Because of the ongoing water for such natural resources, people often get carried away and over look its limited availability.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
Issues like this persist around the world not only because there are greedy people out there, but because there is an exponentially growing population. As the population increases so will the demands for certain things such as water and crops. Another part of the world in which water, land, politics, and culture are colliding is basically in many countries located in Africa such as Rwanda where there is little access to fresh water.
(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteThe West Bank was divided into three different categories 20 years ago. It was supposed to be a temporary arrangement. The Israeli military has had ultimate authority all over the West Bank since capturing it in the 1967 war. But under an interim deal in 1995, the Israelis and the Palestinians agreed to set up the different categories of land in the West Bank. The goal was to reach a comprehensive peace agreement within a few years, and these three categories would vanish. But it hasn't worked out that way. As peace negotiations foundered, the segmented West Bank land and water arrangements have become more entrenched. Area A consists of Palestinian cities, where Palestinian officials are supposed to have political and security control. Smaller Palestinian towns and some agricultural land are in Area B. Here Palestinians are responsible for everything but security, which is shared with Israeli soldiers. Area C is the rest. This amounts to 60 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli control. It winds around Palestinian islands of A and B and spreads into stretches of countryside. Israel controls planning, building and destruction. Since the Israelis have control over most of the land, this is where the conflict starts. Area C is vital for palestinians for agriculture because it’s where they get their water from so they depend on Area C for their economy.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
The political problem is now an environmental problem because since Palestinian and Israelis can’t work together, Area C is getting exploited due to country's dependency on it for resources. Also, their conflict is hurting Palestinian environmentally because their inability to get water is causing the damage of their crops and soil.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding? Conduct some research and write up a brief description here.
Issues like this persist around the world because resources are decreasing and we are unwilling to work together to come up with a solution or a way to share the resources. Another example where water and land and politics and culture are colliding is in Kenya. They are currently going through a drought that is affecting their pasture and availability of water. The growth of agriculture has increased the demands of water so they are now fighting for the water available. Farmers and pastoralists are fighting because they both need water but for different reasons, one needs it for crops and the other for their animals. Unfortunate, this conflict is also affecting them economically. In order to fix this problem, they are planning to restore dams and the farmers and pastoralists has been having meeting on how they could share the resources available and how they can conserve more.
In West Bank, land for agriculture is not healthy. Most areas are dry and arid. This results from the lack of available water resources. In addition, land is not spread out amongst people. Lands A and B are reserved for Israelites (meaning 60% of West Bank is occupied by Israelis) meanwhile Land C is reserved for Palestinians.
ReplyDeleteAs a result of sharing water between the Palestinians and Israelis, the Palestinians haven’t received their fair share. Water is already scarce in this area, and not dividing water supply equally adds onto the problem. Insufficient water amounts in Palestine can deplete soil health. With this comes not only the inability to produce agricultural crops, but it also takes away from the formation and maintenance of naturally-occurring vegetation on the land. Absence of plant life disrupts the ecosystem as a whole and the prosperity of humans and other animals or organic life.
Sudan, a country in Africa, experiences problems with land, water and politics. 80% of the population consists of farmers, making 97% of water usage here go to agricultural practices which strains the water availability and land health. Consistent use of mechanized farming practices strains the land fertility and health of agricultural land. Not only does over-farming damage land, but also land deforestation occurs, as land needs to be created to farm on. Additionally, most water used for farming is taken by rain water, but with rain patterns becoming weary, Sudanese folk need to resort to groundwater. The problem with this is that Sudan shares its groundwater with multiple other countries, since it's source is the Nile River Basin. Lack of regulation or maintenance of water usage by each nation that taps into the basin is a causation for the depletion of natural groundwater, and is not only damaging of the greater-Nile environment, but is also economically disadvantageous for people relying on it.

ReplyDelete1.Israel and Palestine are a two state country, and they share the West Bank. The West Bank is where both countries get their drinking water. However, the split the West Bank into three sections with Israel controlling 60 percent of it. The Palestinians struggle to get water from the West Bank and often find themselves stealing water from the Israelis pipes.
ReplyDelete2.The creation of new states with powerful backing. The number of land is not increasing however, the amount of people are. The creation of Israel by the United States took away land from the Palestinian state. Now the political conflict have caused wars between the two nations. The wars take a lot out of the land such as bombing. Not to mention that increase in erosion because of the state of the two nations.
3.
The conflict in Syria is similar because now there are multiple groups in Syria that want to lead. You can say they have multiple governments and now they are fighting over the limited resources in that state. The resource that is common in the Middle East region is oil and that’s is what this civil war in Syria is about now.
(1) What is the land and water crisis in the West Bank?
ReplyDeleteThe land and water crisis in the West Bank is that the Israelis and Palestinians have been in conflict due to the distribution of water and the discourse about land entitlement. The Israeli government is intentionally providing more water to their citizens, while depriving water from Palestinians such as in Area C of the West Bank (Palestinians had to take it upon themselves to put holes in water source pipes to divert the water towards them). The land issue is that the Israeli wants to annex the West Bank completely, however, the Palestinians of the area consider the West Bank as their home. In some cases, the government has displaced Palestinians from the homes such as the Banifadel, a nomadic arab tribe.
(2) How is the political problem now an environmental problem?
The political dispute between the Israelis and Palestinians has turned into an environmental problem because the conflict has resulted in poor management of the West Bank’s limited water supply, where Palestinians are drilling holes in pipes leading to a loss of water due to diversion. Not only that, but the conflict has led to land degradation for agricultural purposes because Israelis are purposely damaging Palestinian crops and the land itself.
(3) Why do issues like this persist around the world? Cite another example of a place in the world where water and land and politics and culture are colliding?
Issues concerning the dispute of land and water occur due to the cultural entitlements that nations feel they have over land and water, as well as a necessity to sustain their nations. Another example of a dispute of land and water has collided with politics and culture is the dispute between Qatar and Bahrain. During the dispute, Qatar claimed sovereignty over various islands (such as the Hawar Islands and the Janan Island) that Bahrain had already claimed sovereignty for, and to redraw maritime lines that they believed were in their jurisdiction of claiming due to its proximity. Qatar mostly did this in order to gain more of an economic presence from the maritime activity.
